Francisca explains: “My DIY with IOU capsule collection is inspired by the era of “American Ingenuity”. American sportswear is deeply rooted in 7th Ave, and stands for practical, modern style. From the 1930’s to the 1970’s this meant a new independence from European couture. Today, there is evidence of “American Ingenuity” back on 7th Ave. This time however, from a deeper urgency beyond the impractical requirements of a corset. The urgency we are faced with today is about the survival of every species on this planet. As a modern American designer I aspire to help usher in the movement towards ethical and sustainable practices within the fashion industry. My entry for this competition is in support of all those who undertake this great cause.”
Francisca graduated from Parsons School of Design, and has worked in New York for over 10 years, first in apparel, then in accessories. Her newest project is called Ethical Fashion Abroad, a hands on workshop this summer in Costa Rica to introduce designers to various ethical and sustainable aspects of design.
